Searight Hospital, Calcutta
The Searight Hospital was founded in 1984 by Dr Sen-Choudhuri who was working in England at the time, sending the lion’s share of his wages to his wife in India. She set up a small clinic in their home, on the outskirts of Calcutta. In the ‘90s she managed to set up a 25 bed hospital. Dr and Mrs Sen-Choudhuri now run this hospital together and provide irreplaceable medical care to their community. The hospital is now entirely reliant upon funds raised by Dr Sen-Choudhuri on his visits abroad. £1200 a month covers the general running of the hospital.
The hospital has a catchment area of 1 million people, 85% of whom live below the poverty line. Its location, in the village of Rasapunja on the outskirts of Calcutta, means that it is ideally placed to administer much needed medical support. The staff in the hospital live in this community and understand the needs of the patients. The hospital has 25 beds and runs out patient clinics. It houses a maternity ward, male and female wards, an orthopaedic ward and an intensive care unit.
This small hospital can use a little money to change a lot of lives. The Searight hospital provides day to day care that is indispensable to the poverty stricken of Calcutta.
